The regulations for submission to the AFI Awards as a contender don’t exactly make it easy. According to the AFI Awards Rule Book 2008 the film must satisfy various outlines for qualification. The most important point of submission is: The film must be publicly exhibited during the Release Period for paid admission in a commercial cinema, for a run of at least seven consecutive days, in any Australian capital city where the film has a production budget of less than $1.5 million… If the film has a budget above $1.5 million the film must screen in three cities including Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.

Green fire Envy qualified relying purely on self-distribution, under the rules laid out for much higher budget productions.

Thanks to a sponsorship from Hoyts cinemas, Green Fire Envy, screened for one week in Sydney, however, achieving the other screenings for qualification to AFI would be a bit more of a challenge. For several weeks leading up to the AFI submission, the student producers of Participate approached 600 cinemas in Australia. They faced rejection after rejection but eventually succeeded securing 13 weeks of screenings with 3 – 5 screenings per day on each screen.
