Mentors and Speakers  

The many mentors and speakers who have guided Participate students in the art, craft and business of filmmaking include:

Adam Fields, composer. Adam has created feature film scores (Lovelife, Meeting Daddy, The Sky is Falling) and music for television dramas (Beautiful People, Dawn Anna and Dawson's Creek)

Adam Platnick, film producer and president of Freestyle Pictures. Adam is also the former president of Mandalay Pictures and New Regency Pictures, and has served as executive producer and/or producer on more than 40 films including The Score

Alicia Hirsch, consultant for ABC and 20th Century Fox. Previously Alicia was the co-producer in charge of post-production (The District, Nash Bridges, final episode of American Dreams), senior vice-president of special editorial projects, technical services and worldwide distribution for Universal Studios, and vice-president of post-production at MTM Studios

Amotz Zakai, vice-president of production at Echo Lake Productions (La Ciudad, Levity, Things Behind The Sun, Thirteen Conversations About One Thing). Amotz also helps to search for international directors who want to make English-language films

Bettina Moss, screenwriter, script analyst, published journalist, consultant to the Santa Fe Screenwriters Conference, member of the board of directors for the Robey Theater Company and chairwoman emeritus of The Scriptwriters Network. Bettina was also the managing story editor at HBO films for over eight years

Beverly Graf PhD, vice-president of development at Abilene Pictures since 1996. Beverly has many credits as a feature film producer (Fallen, Fracture, Frequency, Hart's War, Primal Fear). She has also worked as a story analyst for Creative Artists Agency, Triad Agency and several other production companies

Brent White, editor for film (A River Runs Through It, Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy, Matilda) and television (Desperate Housewives)

Carole Kirschner
, vice-president of Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television

Corey Kaplan, production designer for television (Cold Case, The X-Files). She has received two Art Director Guild Awards of Excellence in Production Design for a TV Series (1999 and 2001) and one nomination (2000), and been nominated for an Emmy (1999). Corey has also worked as a production designer on many feature films, movies of the week, music videos and commercials

Deland Nuse, cinematographer. Deland has worked on theatrical features, short films and documentaries (The Chilling, The Other Bridge). He is currently working in the independent film movement as a director and cinematographer

Douglas McClure
, entertainment attorney. Doug’s most recent position was at 2929 Productions LLC (a financing, production and sales entity owned by Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner), where he negotiated and drafted financing documents, underlying rights agreements, talent agreements, and domestic and foreign licensing agreements, and was responsible for corporate financing as well as supervising day-to-day production. Previously Doug spent 10 years with First Look Media Inc (formerly Overseas Filmgroup Inc), where he negotiated and drafted domestic and foreign licensing agreements, and acquisition agreements, and was responsible for project and corporate financing, production legal work and general corporate legal matters. Doug was admitted to the California State Bar in 1995 and is a member of the Intellectual Property Section, the Entertainment Section and the Business Law Section of the California State Bar. He has taught various courses in the UCLA Extension Program

Dov S-S Simens, voted America's number-one film instructor by the National Association of Film Schools for more than 10 years. Dov has taught at the University of Southern California (USC), New York University (NYU), University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and many other major universities and film schools around the world. He has revolutionised the film industry with his two-day film school, which packs four years of film education into a single weekend. Dov's graduates include Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill), Guy Ritchie (Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels), Will Smith, Kirk Jones (Waking Ned Devine), Chris Nolan (Memento), Paul Brooks (My Big Fat Greek Wedding), the makers of The Blair Witch Project and the makers of The Matrix trilogy. His students have gone on to shoot, produce and direct films that have grossed over US$6 billion at the box office. Dov's world-famous master classes have been incorporated into Participate’s filmmaking programs

Jason Sprague, partner in charge of Champion Legal’s corporate/commercial and intellectual property divisions. Jason has acted for multinational organisations through to small and medium enterprises, at local, national and international levels

Jerry Jeffress, engineer and electronic system designer, and three-times Academy Award winner. Jerry has worked on special effects for many of Steven Spielberg's films (Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, ET: The Extra-Terrestrial, Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom, Poltergeist, Raiders Of The Lost Ark) and other great classics (Big Trouble In Little China, Dragonslayer, Ghost Busters, Star Wars episodes V and VI)

Jim Tanenbaum CAS, production sound mixer. Jim has mixed 88 features during his long career (The Stunt Man, Volcano), numerous television shows and documentaries, and over 300 commercials. Jim has won an Emmy Award for production sound mixing (Live From Baghdad) and been nominated (Tuesdays With Morrie). He has written two technical manuals on time code, as well as The StellaDAT Recorder and The Production Mixer's Manual

Josef Demian, cinematographer and winner of multiple awards. Josef has credits as director of photography, director and writer on 22 feature films, several documentaries, shorts and television productions. He has been a jury member at national and international film festivals, and taught at prestigious institutions in Australia and Europe. Josef was head of cinematography at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) for 10 years, and created and conducted the Kodak International Masterclasses

Judith Merians, president of Fireproof Careers Workshop and published author. Judith’s former positions include senior vice-president of business and legal affairs at Regent Entertainment, chief operating officer at The Hollywood Experts Online, literary agent at Media Artists Group, senior vice-president of business and legal affairs at Saban International, assistant general counsel at Warner Bros and director of business affairs at Paramount Pictures Corporation

Kelly Kiernan, production executive for New Regency Films and former development producer at Disney Television Animation. Kelly has also worked as a producer, line producer, production manager and assistant director on feature films, television series and commercials. She has credits as a production executive (Just My Luck, Big Momma’s House 2), a unit production manager (UPM) and studio representative (Mr. & Mrs. Smith), and a second unit UPM, overseeing all action sequences and stunt units (Man On Fire). She is a member of the Directors Guild of America (DGA)

Mark Kamps, sound editor for film (A League Of Their Own, Honey I Shrunk The Kids, Last Action Hero, Waterworld) and television (Beverly Hills 90210, Nip/Tuck, Profiler)

Michael O’Rourke, screenwriter and script editor. Michael graduated from the London International Film School in 1981, with a distinction for the direction of his screenplay, A Visitor In The Piano Warehouse. Michael has been a full-time writer and script editor since returning to Australia, with more than a 100 hours of television to his name (Going Home, Neighbours). One of his feature screenplays has also been produced (Holy Tequila). He is a passionate campaigner for screen culture through his involvement with the Federation of NSW and Associated Film Societies, and the Workshop Film Group

Paul Brincat
, production sound recordist and mixer (Blackwater Trail, Ghost Ship, Hildegarde, Mission Impossible II, Pitch Black, Red Planet, Return To The Blue Lagoon, Scooby-Doo, Sniper, Son Of The Mask, Star Wars episodes II and III, The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course, The Real Macaw, The Thin Red Line, Young Einstein). Paul has won a Satellite Award and Australian Screen Sound Guild Award, and was nominated for an Academy Award

Peter Russell
, story analyst for Imagine Films Entertainment, CBS Television Network and Anschutz Film Group (AFG). Peter has also worked as an analyst for Lifetime, Viacom, HBO, Paramount Productions, The Alliance-Atlantis Company, Hearst Entertainment, Dan Curtis Productions, The Landsberg Company and Citadel Entertainment. He is a former theatre director and recipient of the Nick Adams Short Story Award

Richard Friedman, director, writer and producer of feature films (DarkWolf), television movies, series and network specials (Baywatch Nights, Friday The 13th: The Series, Lois And Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman, Monsters, Silk Stalkings, Tales From The Darkside), and music videos

Sam Noble, actor and acting teacher. Sam has worked on feature and short films (Court Of Lonely Royals, Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King, See No Evil), television dramas (All Saints, Gabriel, Home And Away, New Awakenings) and many commercials. She has taught in Sydney and Los Angeles, is also an accomplished writer and runs a private theatre company, Parlour Productions

Stephanie Allain, senior vice-president at Columbia Pictures (Biker Boyz, Desperado, El Mariachi, Good Boy!, The Craft)

Stephanie Palmer, founder of consulting firm Good in a Room. Stephanie leads workshops and offers private consultations around the world, teaching creative professionals how to present their projects so that they are bought and produced. She was named one of the ‘Next Generation: Top 35 Executives Under 35’ by The Hollywood Reporter and has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, in Variety and on National Public Radio. As the director of creative affairs at MGM Pictures, she acquired screenplays, books and pitches, and supervised their development (A Guy Thing, Agent Cody Banks and Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London, Be Cool, Good Boy, Legally Blonde, Sleepover). Before MGM, she worked in development at Jerry Bruckheimer Films (Armageddon, Con Air, Enemy Of The State). Her first job in the business was as an intern on the Academy Award-winning Titanic. A passionate advocate for emerging creative voices, Stephanie promotes diversity and equality in the entertainment industry. She is a member of the Chamber of Commerce's Entertainment Industry Business Council, American Film Institute, Museum of Television and Radio, and Women in Film

Steven Stamstad, vice-president of marketing at The Walt Disney Company

Tolley Casparis, independent casting director for television and film (Guncrazy), commercials (Levis, The Gap) and over 400 music videos (Nelly, Prince, The Crystal Method)

Tony Barry, actor and winner of multiple awards. Tony has credits in over 50 feature films (A Man’s Gotta Do, Cross-Life, Lennie Cahill Shoots Through, Middle Of Nowhere, Solo, Sympathy For Lady Vengance, The Night We Called It A Day) and over 45 television series. He has performed in stage plays in Australia, Japan and New Zealand, and been an active supporter of the Australian film and television industry throughout his performance career.
